Particularly fascinating is the legendary Venus Grotto, an artificial stalactite cave that creates a unique, almost magical atmosphere through light, water and imagination.

What a view across the water: Lake Chiemsee glistens (mostly) in the sun, the Alps loom on the horizon and suddenly everything feels a little more spacious, peaceful and free. It’s no wonder Lake Chiemsee is also known as the ‘Bavarian Sea’. And it’s a hit whatever the weather!

Even the crossing is an experience: we glide across the vast expanse of water by boat, past small islands and with ever-changing views until our destination slowly comes into view: Herreninsel.

There, Herrenchiemsee Palace awaits us, King Ludwig II’s homage to Versailles. And indeed: as you walk through the magnificent rooms, you immediately sense the grand stage the king created here. The famous Hall of Mirrors seems endless, chandeliers sparkle, and gilded ornaments speak of power, beauty and the dream of absolute monarchy.

In the adjoining King Ludwig II Museum, we delve even deeper: personal belongings, original garments, pictures and fascinating background stories bring the man behind the legend to life, caught between retreat, fantasy and reality.

After so much royal splendour, a quite different kind of magic awaits us: Fraueninsel. Here, everything moves at a slightly slower pace. Narrow lanes, blooming gardens, cosy cafés and Frauenwörth Abbey characterise the scene. Fishing boats bob gently against the shore, whilst artists and craftspeople lend the place its special atmosphere – almost like a small, lively village in the middle of the lake.

And time and again, that view of the water, the mountains, the vast expanse.

On the return journey, we let the impressions linger: the tranquillity of the lake, the splendour of the palace, the stories of a king and the special atmosphere of this unique landscape.

For history buffs: on the island of Herrenchiemsee, we can also visit the exhibition on the 1948 Constitutional Convention at the Augustinian Monastery (Old Castle) together and really feel the spirit of freedom and democracy.
